As individuals it’s hard to challenge our monopoly utilities, but when our organizations work together we can and do make a difference.
Our Network
Kentuckians for Energy Democracy exists because our energy bills are too high and they don’t need to be. We’re here because we’re already paying the price for extreme weather events caused by yesterday’s energy choices. We’re here because every Kentuckian deserves clean air, pure water, and healthy communities. We’re here to tell the truth: we no longer have to choose between these needs and affordable, reliable energy! The solutions are already available, and they are cheaper than business as usual.
We exist because our utilities could be investing in energy efficiency, rooftop solar, and battery storage – at our homes, churches, and businesses – for less than what we’re already paying for expensive power plants and costly fuels. We’re here because our utilities won’t do that unless we make them.
We exist because our power lies in raising our voices together, and our many small actions are having a big impact! We’re here because our energy system is broken. The only way we can fix it is together. We want every Kentuckian to help decide our energy future. Utilities and governments exist to serve us. They should be accountable to us. We invite all Kentuckians to join our work.

What do we do?

- Build power by helping Kentuckians understand how the Public Service Commission (PSC) works, and how their voices can influence their decisions.
- Educate decision makers on best practices and emerging strategies from across the country
- Share strategy and play to our strengths
- Organize to make the PSC more transparent, equitable, and democratic
- Advocate for real solutions that benefit Kentuckians to make electricity affordable, resilient, and reliable
- Support Kentuckians in submitting public comments to the PSC
- Help support member organizations to jointly intervene in PSC cases

Kentucky Conservation Committee
KCC is a state-based conservation and policy collaborative established in 1975. Our mission is to provide a trusted voice of the public in Kentucky’s capitol and throughout Kentucky, effectively advocating for protection, restoration, and sustainable use of natural resource for the equitable benefit of all citizens in our Commonwealth.
KCC’s work focuses on four primary project areas: clean energy, climate action, biodiversity, and land conservation.
Kentuckians for the Commonwealth
KFTC is a community of people inspired by a vision of a thriving society where people are free from oppression and where racial, economic and environmental justice exists for all. Guided by Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and others directly impacted by oppression, KFTC organizes Kentuckians to dismantle racism, reimagine democracy, and transform the future of our Commonwealth.
Metropolitan Housing Coalition
MHC, a coalition of approximately 300 members dedicated to affordable housing in Louisville, created the campaign EveryHome to connect energy affordability into the housing affordability conversation. MHC understands that to have affordable housing, we must have affordable energy. EveryHome seeks to educate and engage the community on the interconnectedness of energy costs and housing affordability. By addressing these issues together, we can develop comprehensive solutions that benefit residents across our city
The Mountain Association is a nonprofit, established in 1976, that invests in people and places in order to build a new economy in Eastern Kentucky. Their Lending team offers loans to existing and startup businesses and organizations. Because they are a Community Development Financial Institution and a nonprofit, they offer greater flexibility and lend to those who may not otherwise qualify. Unlike most traditional lenders, they offer flexible payment schedules and a variety of other services. Their Business Support program connects business owners and nonprofit leaders to consultants who can help them succeed – from website development to social media marketing, and more. Mountain Association’s Energy experts help businesses, organizations and public agencies find much-needed cost savings through utility bill analysis, on-site energy efficiency and solar assessments, grant application support, and financing. They also engage in research, communications and advocacy for policy and narrative change, and work with partners on a variety of projects to demonstrate what’s possible in Eastern Kentucky.
Our mission is rooted in people power. We’re fighting for clean air, clean water, healthy soil, and access to Kentucky’s wild beauty for everyone—now and for future generations. We’re also deeply committed to environmental justice: ensuring that all people, regardless of race, income, or background, are treated fairly in the creation and enforcement of environmental policies.
