It’s easy to feel like there is nothing that we can do. The electric bill comes, we either pay it or we can’t. It doesn’t have to be this way.
But it takes all of us, taking action together to make real change.
We Need Utility Disconnection Protection
Everyone deserves a safe, comfortable home, enough food to eat, and affordable healthcare.
Once again the legislature has failed to act on weather-related utility disconnection protections. Despite public outcry and several legislators in support, the Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee (Rep. Jim Gooch) refused to hear HB 377.
Now we are heading towards a summer season that promises high temperatures unprotected. But, we won’t stop pushing for what Kentuckians deserve and what 42 other states already have; permanent, statewide disconnection protections when the weather is bad. Stay tuned for upcoming ways to put pressure back on our elected officials to do the right thing.
Ways to Take Action
1. Host an energy efficiency workshop to help your friends and neighbors lower their electric bills OR help start a weatherization mutual aid team in your community. Reach out for more information!
2. Share your disconnection story. Utilities say they don’t disconnect when the weather is bad. We know that’s not true. Call and leave a message on our message line or use this form to share your disconnection story. (Can be anonymous)
